Messenger was formed in 1994, when St. Luke’s Obelisk was first experimenting with a contemporary style of worship.  The band for the first service was four members, three of whom are still in the band!  The band (bass, piano, drums and singers) played a few older songs and what were considered “contemporary” Christian songs at that first service.
After that first service, St. Luke’s decided to have a permanent contemporary style service, as approved by the congregation.  A guitar player was added for the second service and Messenger continued to evolve over the years, adding additional guitars and singers over the years.  The recruitment of younger musicians has been a boon for the band but has played havoc with the turnover, as the teens have graduated and moved away to college (and away from the band).
Messenger has had a distinctive style almost from the beginning. With the band members’ roots in rock and roll, there is a definite edge to their music and their beat.  Included in Messenger’s playlist are old rock and roll songs re-written with Christian lyrics and traditional hymns sung to rock and roll tunes.  Throw in a bit of old time gospel and it’s an eclectic mix that defines the Messenger sound.
Messenger has played a wide array of venues, including an anniversary service for the bishop (the only band asked to play at the event), Lutheran Brotherhood Christmas parties, Thrivent picnics and Upper Frederick Community events.  We have also played at many special events at St. Luke’s, such as the Spring Supper Social and many youth events.
